Every fall, a new wave of Chinese families — some based in mainland China, many already living in North America, Europe or Oceania — begin the process of researching private schools for the following year’s admissions cycle. Most schools think of this as a conversation that starts once an inquiry or application lands in their inbox. In reality, by the time a family reaches out, they’ve often already spent months forming an impression of the school — and deciding whether it belongs on their shortlist at all.
Why RedNote, Not Just Your School Website
RedNote (Xiaohongshu) — often described as China’s Instagram — has become something closer to a search engine for Chinese families making major decisions, including where to send their children to school. Families use it to see real accounts from other parents, honest impressions of campus life, and firsthand answers to the questions a school’s own website was never designed to address.
This matters just as much for families already settled in North America, UK or Australia, as it does for those still in China. A school’s website, brochure, and English-language social media are built for one audience. RedNote is where the other conversation is happening — often well before a school even knows a family exists.
This isn’t only relevant to schools with a large international cohort today. Whether a family is applying from overseas or already living down the road, and whether a school is boarding or day, we’ve consistently seen Chinese families research schools in much the same way — through the same platform, at the same stage.
What This Looks Like in Practice
We’ve helped schools build and manage an official RedNote presence, including a few top private schools in Southeast Asia, China and Canada, giving us a close look at how this plays out for a top-notch private institution specifically. This work sits alongside our broader experience with Chinese families abroad — including managing RedNote for more than 30 premium student residences across the world.
Timing Is the Real Advantage
The schools that benefit most from this aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets — they’re the ones who start before the research window opens rather than after. A school with an established RedNote presence going into this season is already part of the conversation families are having while they build their shortlist. A school that waits until applications open is trying to catch up to decisions that, for many families, have already been made.
And because this research cycle repeats every year, visibility built now doesn’t end with this year’s applicants — it carries into every cohort that follows.
Getting Ahead of This Year’s Cycle
If your school doesn’t yet have a presence where these families are already researching, there’s still time to build one before this year’s shortlisting is finished. We’d be glad to talk through what that could look like for your school.
